Power 4 Puerto Rico Applauds Congress Passing Disaster Relief

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, Power 4 Puerto Rico Director Erica González issued the following statement on Congress passing a disaster aid package:

“Despite being blocked by a handful of Republican lawmakers and President Trump’s constant lies about the funding the island received, Congress has finally approved a disaster aid package that covers many of Puerto Rico’s needs and other areas hit by disasters. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer heard the loud and consistent advocacy by Puerto Ricans and allies, and we applaud them for their leadership and for holding the line as President Trump unsuccessfully tried to use Puerto Rico like a political football.

“It is shameful that Republicans would want to inject partisan politics into a bill that would help millions of U.S. citizens across the country, Puerto Rico and U.S. territories. Our message that we can't let a President pick which group of U.S. citizens is 'more deserving' of disaster aid than others was heard loud and clear. This much-needed relief is long-overdue, and that’s why we’re urging President Trump to do what’s right by the American people and sign this bill immediately.”
